New Report Forecasts 56% Growth in IP Videoconferencing Infrastructure Market Gateways, Gatekeepers, and MCUs to Empower Conferencing Mainstream November 30, 1999, Brookline, MA: Wainhouse Research today announced availability of its newest market research report, "Teleconferencing Markets and Strategies: Multimedia Networking Infrastructure," an in-depth study of the gateways, gatekeepers, and video bridges (multipoint control units) that are the key components impacting the videoconferencing and visual communications industries. The report concludes that the IP-based segment of the market will grow at a compound growth rate of ~56% to over $235 million in factory revenues by the year 2004. This contrasts sharply with the ISDN-based segment of the market which is forecast to experience a 7.7% growth rate, but peak before the year 2004 at $170 million as IP-based networks become the preferred vehicle for audio and videoconferencing and as real-time conferencing becomes integrated with streaming media and web-based presentations. The report notes that most of the videoconferencing systems shipping today already support both ISDN (H.320) and IP (H.323) videoconferencing, so that the delay in IP adoption is related to the networks themselves and to the availability of suitable, interoperable multimedia networking infrastructure components. While many technical and economic hurdles still exist, Wainhouse Research believes that the migration to IP for real-time conferencing is inevitable and that by the end of the 5-year forecast period, 90% of all data communications traffic will move as IP packets. The report also forecasts a dramatic shift in the H.320 and H.323 MCU market as large numbers of customers move to embedded MCU technology with their lower cost per port. Embedded MCU ports are forecast to represent over 74% of the port units in 2004, up sharply from just 13% of the port units in 1998, when this type of product was first introduced. Multimedia Networking Infrastructure provides a detailed five-year forecast for gateways, gatekeepers, and MCUs by network type and product category. The 220-page report with over 40 figures includes an overview of the industry, technologies, and standards, as well as a review of 21 key suppliers. Multimedia Networking Infrastructure is Volume 1 of Wainhouse Research's planned three part series. Volume 2 will cover the endpoint products and technologies and Volume 3 will cover the teleconferencing services industry. The study is a continuation of the teleconferencing research program and report series begun by the same authors under the auspices of Forward Concepts (Tempe, AZ). Teleconferencing Markets and Strategies" is available on an annual subscription basis for $12,500. Individual reports are also available, as well. The newest report of the series, "Teleconferencing Markets and Strategies: Multimedia Networking Infrastructure" is available separately for $3,295.
