Webcams Gaining Popularity in Web Conferences

Almost 1/3 of Wainhouse Research WebMetrics Panelists
Say That Video is Used in over Half of Their Conferences

April 29, 2005, Brookline MA - In the latest report from Wainhouse Research's quarterly WebMetrics research program, respondents indicated that the number of conferences that involve video or a webcam is brisk: approximately 30% say that video is used in over half of their conferences, while approximately 10% say they use video in over 95% of their web conferences.

In a survey of the WebMetrics Panel conducted online in April, 2005, Wainhouse Research heard from 274 buyers and users of web conferencing on their deployment behavior, brand awareness, and feature preferences. Survey responses demonstrate how brands compare (recognition, reputation), usage patterns, hosting model plans, the importance of specific sharing and interactivity features, why they use web conferencing, and several other topics.

"Many enterprises large and small are finding that adding a webcam to a web conference - with minimal if any incremental cost - adds a nice dose of visual personalization to what might otherwise be a straightforward data and voice interaction," said Alan Greenberg, Senior Analyst & Consultant with Wainhouse Research.

Greenberg added that verbatim remarks from the panel suggest a deepening view of reasons for using web conferencing. "Users and buyers are beginning to suggest that a wider variety of benefits are becoming compelling. The full report shows that the complexity and quantity of perceived benefits are on the increase as web conferencing software takes deeper root into organizations."

The report details how leading vendors such as Microsoft, WebEx, Centra, Cisco, Citrix, Genesys, Raindance, Oracle, Polycom, and several others are rated by the panel in ten specific areas including price, performance, and ease-of-use - plus how important each of those areas are to the panel.

The WebMetrics Q1 2005 Report is available by annual subscription or as individual quarterly reports. End users who participate in the surveys receive a high-level summary of the findings and qualify for prize drawings. Vendors and service providers seeking more information about the survey series or users wishing to participate in future WebMetrics surveys should visit www.wainhouse.com/webmetrics.

These results and other issues surrounding web conferencing, videoconferencing, and IP communications will be discussed at the Wainhouse Research Summit July 13-15, 2005 at the Colonnade Hotel in Boston, MA. Details are available at www.wainhouse.com/wrsummit.
