While I understand the limitations of the internet, and that is not the context of my question, I want to know what is available to privide 'internet-like' connectivity with QoS. It seems that the big 'Shared Bandwidth Promise' is that I should be able to rent a single pipe to use dynamically and ad-hoc as needed for all of my communications needs- data, voice, and video. I understand fairly well how this is done with an intranet, and it seems that if Company A has such a service with Provider X and Company B has a similar service with Provider Y, that Provider X and Provider Y should be able to nail up an IP video link as needed, even as other IP video, IP voice, and data links are being nail up and torn down with other Providers and Companies as needed. Ideally, my service provider would have gateway services as well, so that I can call to voice POTS and video ISDN whenever necessary. Isn't this basically what happens in the PSTN world already? Is the problem that there is not necessarily a QoS link between Provider X and Provider Y? Is this smply a market-driven issue? it seems there would be tremendous market opportunity for these services. I'm guessing that I don't grasp the compexity or magnitude of the issue, but I have videoconferencing clientele who are frustrated by the multiple charges for ISDN, and really want share all bandwidth for all their needs, and use gateway services as needed, they don't like paying for ISDN all the time in addition to usage charges. Thanks very much for any responses!
Take care,
Gerry
