In WRB-0726, Andrew gives his summary of TANDBERG's Precision HD announcement, and shares his thoughts as well.

Hi Andy, saw the news in Wainhouse. Not a big supprize. As you stated, everybody was expecting this.
Not sure what you meant about hiding sending EP, TANDBERG has been able to do HD on the MXP platform since the start of the year. Plug in any component or DVI capable camera, you got it.
The issue was they where only doing 15fps.

I think you will find that TANDBERG supports more resolutions when it comes to Optimal Resolution (not only 16:9, but all the native PAL, NTSC and PC resolutions in addition). This makes a big difference for people with different TV monitors.

I like the T1700, finally a fully integrated powerful EP on the desk top. Little suprised it did not come with dial pad like the T150. I think all desk system should have that.

Hats off for TANDBERG managing to upgrade their whole product protfolie with SW, but it seems the set tops have been fazed out (770, 880, 990). Not terribly suprizing since they only had one DVI output. Very interesting to see what these new Edge systems have on the back.

Very powerfull being able to manage a whole video solution, incl. behind a FW! That is major for many companies.

HD camera: Looks good, I presume they have done a better job than Lifesize had before launching. I wonder if the price tag means 3CCD instead of the 1 CCD from Lifesize? Time will tell.
I bet there are a few supprized faces at Lifesize. They have been going around talking aoubt that TANDBERG had to change HW on the codec MXP platform because they did not have enough inputs for HD.
He, he, now it seems TANDBDERG just did a SW upgrade and have one new inputs for HD, in addition to DVI input.

Wow, I just checked the camera spec on the web, it is CMOS! Wow! Impressive! CMOS have usually been only for very, very high end video cameras. Can't wait to see how good it is.

I am defently buying a T1700 ASAP.

AndyN: for information, TANDBERG has had the Profile series for a year now I think (T3000 MXP Profile, T6000 MXP Profile (one WXGA screen)). The only difference now it seems is they are shipping with HD camera, so the Profile is still the same, old systems I am sure can be upgraded.
Should be the same for T7000 and T8000 (the non profile series). They should also be able just upgrade the camera.
Have we seen the end of the 4:3 systems T6000 and T3000? Yes we have, just saw their web site:

Seems like all customers with a C6000MXP unit in their system still have a lot of value left, but the rest of the codecs have been replaced with a HD line.
I wonder if the c3000 MXP has also survivied, seems so, checked the web pages.

They are still selling the old set tops, probably for everybody having 4:3 systems and no ambition to do HD, but since the new units can do everything these old ones can do, you can safely call them legacy, like the Classic units.

I would say TANDBERG has done an incredible sweep again, more details will show if they pulled it off.
Seems like we also can start waiving good bye to the set top era.

I have three questions for somebody from Tandberg (or in the know):

1) What is the maximum distance HD will travel over the high speed serial bus?

2) How many HD cameras are supported? (I'm assuming two - one on the serial bus, the other over DVI).

3) Is it just a software upgrade for the Tandberg 3000MXP and 6000MXP plus the new camera? (it is discussed above, but maybe too many assumptions)

All I can say is .... WOW

I think Tandberg did a great job of balancing new product introduction with the Edge 75/85/95, new HD camera and the 1700....

AND maintaining investment protection for the owners of the MXP series endpoints by offering F5 software and what I think will be upgrade kits for MXPs.

The part that always amazes me is the corporate disciple that they have to keep it under wraps unil its ready...
The same day that its announced there is F5 ready for download with release notes, datasheets, install guides and user manaual for all the new systems on the web site ready to go.

I'm not all that sure about the "Bookshelf" form factor of the Edge series... Can I set the edge system horizontally and place it under the HD camera and make a 2 piece settop package?

I'm curious if they are marketing the 770/880/990 as CRT settops and the Edge 75/85/95 as LCD/Plasma settops?

I'm not sure if my client is reqady for 1meg IP calls on their network, but my take on it is if there is not a net increase in cost I will always favor the new HD ready gear. I do not know if people, especially those new to VTC are willing to pay extra for HD ready/capable equipment.....

Time will tell..... Overall another great product launch that will futher strenghten their market position.

Just my .02

The new HD camera will improve all types of calls, also 384k calls.
